For this brief we are photographing four categories.

these are as follows;

1. A familiar place that is significant or important to you

2. The city or urban sprawl

3. Wilderness or countryside

4. An alien or foreign enviroment

I have researched other photographers who have photographed places to see how they used composition, lighting and ideas

I fell in love with the work off Maran Stawiarz

As soon as I read this brief and I saw that we could photograph a place that is significant and important to us i knew exactly where I wanted to photograph.

Rivington - near Bolton

This is special to me as this is where I met my partner and this is where he proposed to me

I looked at other who had photographed Rivington

Alien and Foreign Enviroment

For the alien and foreign environment I thought about where I have been were I have felt out of place, uncomfortable.

I thought about Furness Abby in Barrow in Furness, Cumbria.

The Abbey dates back to 1123 and was the home to many monks over the years.

The Abby is said to be haunted and you do really feel uncomfortable when you are walking round.

Legend has it there are 3 ghosts. First a monk who was murdered in the Abbey he is said to walk up and down the stairs. Secondly the sightings of the squires daughter who seems to look like she is rebuilding the Abbey, the most famous is the headless monk who rides horseback through the Abby.

There is also a burial of William Russell who was the Bishop off Mann and of the isles.

This image has been altered in lightroom it has just been changed to black and white and i have upped the tones of the highlights to emphasise the patterns in the architecture.

I have chosen this image as i like the fact that you have the archway to look through into the outside area, i felt this image gave the impression of being a spooky place.

The next image has been taken at the Abbey, but as you can see its a more overall look at the Abbey. This image has been edited in lightroom by adding a sepia tone. I felt this tone added the old fashioned effect

Urban and City Sprawl

For the city and urban images i have been looking at some books for some ideas on how photographers have captured 'places'

Streets and spaces urban photography - Shirley Baker

the book consists of images over many years from 1960s up till 2000
most images consist of streets around the Manchester area showing homes and people sat outside their homes.

Other images are of children playing out.

Another book i have been looking at is Martin Parr - small world

Although his images of 'places' are in foreign countries I wanted to show his work as he does this differently, he likes to capture the people taking photos

Although this would not be appropriate for my brief as these images are more to about people rather than places, it still shows how other photographer work and take images differently.

I decided to do some test shots for this criteria. I went to Preston train station and I used a slow shutter speed to get the moving body's.

I chose Preston train station as the building has character.
I wanted to show the hectic everyday life people running to catch a train, people dashing to work etc

i have edited this image by changing it to black and white and turned up the highlights to see the architecture more clearly.

I next thought i would go to Manchester to capture the city life.

I have walked around various parts of Manchester including the town centre where all the shops are situated inside and outside.

The city centre where the wheel is, and also outside of the print works building.

I have edited some images on lightroom

This image has been edited as i have used the coloring tools to alter the image.

I have changed the back building lighting to a red and i have altered the highlights of the image so below the wheel is dark

I have edited this image in lightroom using a black and white effect then i have brought out the lights to make them more prominent using the lightening tool

I have also taken some pictures looking out over Blackburn from high up, i wanted to do this differently as i wanted to show the lights showing the busy movement of the town

Landscape and Wilderness

For the landscape and wildness image i have been looking for inspiration in some books.

A book called the Ribble valley in pictures show beautiful landscapes i used a location from the book to photograph. This is my favorite image from the shoot it was taken on Ribchester bridge
